- D Free cash flow = cash from operations minus capital expenditure.
Totals may not add up because of rounding.
Microsoft's free cash flow stayed between USD 59.5 billion in FY2023 and USD 74.1 billion in FY2024 across the 5 fiscal years. In FY2026 it was USD 67.0 billion, below the USD 71.6 billion of FY2025, as capital expenditure rose by more than cash from operations did. Capital expenditure was USD 64.6 billion in FY2025 and USD 44.5 billion in FY2024.
Dividends paid rose in each year after FY2022, from USD 18.1 billion in FY2022 to USD 26.4 billion in FY2026. Buybacks moved less steadily: USD 32.7 billion in FY2022, a low of USD 17.3 billion in FY2024, and USD 22.3 billion in FY2026. In FY2026, dividends paid and buybacks together were smaller than free cash flow.

What was Microsoft's net cash position at the end of FY2026?
Microsoft held USD 76.8 billion of cash and short-term investments and USD 40.3 billion of total debt at 30 Jun 2026. Its net debt, our calculation, was therefore negative USD 36.5 billion, which means a net cash position rather than net debt.

- D Total debt = short-term debt + long-term debt, from the same filing.
- D Net debt = total debt minus cash and short-term investments; a negative value is net cash.
Across those 5 quarters, cash and short-term investments peaked at USD 102 billion in Q1 FY2026 and were USD 94.6 billion in Q4 FY2025. Total debt was USD 43.2 billion in both of those quarters and USD 40.3 billion in Q4 FY2026. So the movement in net cash across the 5 quarters came mostly from cash, not from borrowing.
Net cash was USD 51.4 billion in Q4 FY2025, USD 58.8 billion in Q1 FY2026 and USD 49.2 billion in Q2 FY2026. It then fell to USD 38.0 billion in Q3 FY2026 and USD 36.5 billion in Q4 FY2026. The section above shows FY2026 capital expenditure of USD 116 billion. A balance sheet does not tie a given cash movement to a given use, so this page draws no link between the two.

How we got these numbers
Every figure comes from Microsoft's Forms 10-Q and 10-K as filed with the SEC. Derived values are marked D and explained below.
Full method for this page
- Source documents
- Forms 10-Q (Q1 FY2025 to Q3 FY2026) and 10-K (FY2019 to FY2026)
- Period covered
- 8 quarters and 5 fiscal years
- Calculations
- TTM = sum of the last 4 quarters. Q4 = fiscal year minus the nine-month YTD. Margins = line item ÷ revenue. FCF = cash from operations − capital expenditure. EBITDA = operating income + depreciation and amortisation (our calculation). Net debt = total debt − cash and short-term investments. CAGR = compound annual growth over three fiscal years.
- Restatements
- None in the periods shown.
- Comparator
- Each profile row compares the current value with Microsoft's own last five fiscal years, FY2022 to FY2026: the median of those five years and their range, from the lowest to the highest. A current value outside that range is drawn just past the end of the strip. Fewer than 5 covered peers exist, so there is no sector median yet.
- Currency
- As reported (USD); no FX conversion.
